Scottish Grand National Preview..

Hi Reader

It's Scotland's Grand National Day at Ayr today.

Another intriguing contest more so with Willie Mullins delcaring six runners!

Last years winner, Macdermott returns but it's tougher for him this time round off a five pound higher handicap mark.

Ok, let's crack on with today's preview and tips.

Scottish Grand National Flash Hand

We have 23 runners in the 2025 Scottish Grand National at Ayr Racecourse in Scotland.

It could well be folly to take on the Willie Mullins runners in the Scottish Grand National. As a form student I cannot see that the Mullins runners are thrown in on their winter chasing form by any means. Olympic Man has the ability but is prone to clattering a fence and it takes a leap of faith to think he will jump 27 fences without a howler!

Nigel Twiston-Davies loves to target this race and relies solely on The Kniphand. This horse will love going out in trip having stayed on well to finish second behind a well handicapped Moroder at Doncaster in the Grimthorpe handicap chase. As a hurdler, The Kniphand won twice over extended three miles tips at Doncaster on good to soft and good ground.

Normally, a stayer over hurdlers gets much further over fences as they can catch a breath when jumping a fence. The Kniphand has placed on all five runs this season. I like that he carries a low weight of 10-5 and remains unexposed on his eight runs over fences and first run over a marathon trip.

Liz Doyle (no relation) travels Flash De Touzaine over for a second go at winning the Scottish Grand National. He finished third here in the 2023 version won by Kitty’s Light. That run proved he stays well and enjoys good ground. I think the ground will be closer to good than good to soft with the sunshine forecast on Saturday. Flash De Touzaine is rated four pounds lower off 126 this time round.

Sean Flanagan is an excellent jockey and very strong in a finish. Flash De Touzaine showed his well being with an easy win a month ago at Limerick over just short of three miles on good ground. A low weight of 10-7 helps and he can be involved in the finish with a good start. Now is the time to back him when in form and coming here fresh following a small winter break.

Ayr 3:35

0.5 point each way The Kniphand 12/1 Unibet else 11/1 Paddy Power, both paying 6 places.

0.5 point each way Flash De Touzaine 28/1 Bet365 else 25/1 generally, 6 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky

Hi Reader We switch to the flat for the Lincoln Heritage Handicap at Doncaster today. Next weekend it's the Aintree Grand National! Crazierthandaisy was a late non-runner last Saturday. It left a gap and best going forward to select two runners against the field in the big race on Saturdays.
