Stewards' Cup Heritage Handicap Preview..

Hi Reader

A massive 28 runner field lines up in the 2025 Stewards' Cup on the final day of the Goodwood Festival.

For several years in the 1830s the senior steward at Goodwood presented an annual cup to the winner of any race of his choosing. The choice varied each year, and the trophy was awarded for events with distances of up to 1½ miles.

A perpetual race for the Stewards' Cup over a sprint distance of 6 furlongs was conceived by Lord George Bentinck in late 1839, and the inaugural running took place the following summer.

The race was formerly held on the opening day of the five-day Glorious Goodwood meeting. It was moved to the final day in 1993. The 2015 running was sponsored by Qatar and the name reverted to the Stewards' Cup.

Jamie Spencer Right Man in Stewards' Cup

A massive 28 runner field lines up in the 2025 Stewards' Cup on the final day of the Goodwood Festival.

The ground is drying up quickly since the downpours on Thursday which is good news for everyone. Get It is sure to go hard off the front end and that points to high drawn horses coming to the fore.

Jakajaro didn’t get the cleanest of runs when a solid sixth over five furlongs on Tuesday. The ground is drying out all the time and could well turn from good to soft to good by tomorrow afternoon. Jakajaro will enjoy that ground and needs six furlongs on a fast downhill track like Goodwood.

Jakajaro met trouble in running at Ascot two runs ago when travelling well with a furlong to go. Jamie Spencer should have more time to get him a clean run over six furlongs. His draw in stall 18 looks decent enough with Get It drawn high in stall 27. Jakajaro is a well handicapped four-year-old who finished second behind She’s Quality in a listed race at Tipperary last season.

Strike Red ran well in the Skybet Dash Handicap at York last Saturday. The first five all ran down the far side with Strike Red racing away from those key horses. The heavy rain on Thursday is a godsend for this horse who likes to get his toe in. We know he is well handicapped down to a mark of 94 which is there or thereabouts his winning mark.

Strike Red just failed to beat a 3yo Elmonjed conceding weight at the York Ebor Festival last summer. He’s a classy sprinter who loves these big sprints. Billy Garritty knows the horse well and I like his high draw with Get It likely to lead the field and drawn high too.

Dangers are everywhere with the well named "Hammer The Hammer" a big player if his low draw works out. We backed Apollo One last year when second for the second year running! He has his chance however his is a tough race for his seven pound claming jockey, Alice Bond.

Goodwood 3:05

0.5 point each way Jakajaro 11/1 Skybet, 7 places else 11/1 generally, 6 places.

0.5 point each way Strike Red 11/1 Skybet, 7 places else 11/1 generally, 6 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky
