Ascot Rotary Club Festive Premier Handicap Hurdle Preview..

Hi Reader

It's the last big day of racing before Christmas.

We can enjoy some cracking races at Ascot before the busy Christmas racing period.

Good news is that next Saturday is Welsh National Day at Chepstow and Paddy Power Handicap Chase day at Leopardstown. Two of the best staying handicap chases each season and I will cover both races in this column next weekend.

Best of luck today, happy christmas and see you on the other side!

Ok, let's crack on with today's preview and tips.

Sticktotheplan In Ascot Hurdle Cracker

What a premier handicap hurdle we have here to enjoy in the runup to Christmas.

It's competitive race puzzles like this that tests punters and bookies alike. I think any of ten of the twelve runners could win if bringing their A game.

Many familiar names here in a proper handicap hurdle. Alexei will need to be a grade 2 or higher horse to win carrying 12 stone following a stone hike for winning the Greatwood hurdle. Our friend Wilful is well in on his Chepstow run but would prefer better ground and is not the most robust in a finish. In the end I am backing the Olly Murphy trained Sticktotheplan.

He powered up the hill to win at the Galway Festival before moving to the UK and winning the Persian War hurdle at Chepstow. We must forgive his below form run at Haydock in a Grade 2 novices’ hurdle which was run too slowly. This is his first handicap, and he should settle well in behind a likely strong pace and hill finish. Sean Bowen rides and I think Sticktotheplan is well overpriced with soft ground favourable.

Ascot 3:35

1 point each way Sticktotheplan 33/1 generally, 4 places.

Happy Christmas,

Nicky
