Hi Reader
The Wokingham Stakes handicap is one of the best of the year and most competitive of its type. It's a 0-110 rated handicap for three year olds and upwards with a maximum field of 28 runners.
The event is named after Wokingham, a market town several miles to the west of Ascot. It was established in 1813, and the inaugural running was won by Pointers, owned by the Duke of York. For many years the Wokingham Stakes was divided into two or three separate classes, but it became a single race in 1874, only 2020 ran a Silver Wokingham during COVID-19 pandemic.
The Wokingham Stakes is now contested on the final day of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting.

Jarraaf Wonder in Wokingham Stakes
The Wokingham Stakes handicap is one of the best of the year and most competitive of its type.
It's a 0-110 rated handicap for three year olds and upwards with a maximum field of 28 runners.
Jarraaf is near the top of the market and for good reason. This lightly raced four-year-old has never finished worse than fourth in all seven runs winning three times. Jarraaf has excelled at Ascot winning twice over course and distance last season on good and good to firm ground. On his other run at Ascot, he finished second to Apollo One on soft ground in his first run at Group 3 level.
Owen Burrows has run him once this season where he finished fourth at Salisbury at listed level. Jarraff looks to tire near the end of that race looking in need of the run. He will be proper fit today and is not too badly drawn in stall 12 with the front running Get It alongside in stall 13. The proverbial group horse in a handicap applies to Jarraff.
Woodhay Wonder has a cracking chance off a handicap mark of 98. The four-year-old filly loves fast ground and placed here twice over five furlongs last season on good to firm ground. She loves straight galloping courses with two wins over six furlongs at Newmarket last year. This season she has run twice at Newmarket in races won by More Thunder who is a short-priced favourite to win this race.
She was caught out on a wing on her latest run, so it wasn’t as bad as eight place looks. Two runs ago she finished just over three lengths behind More Thunder and Aramram conceding 12lbs to the winner and 11lbs to Aranram. Today, she meets those two fancied horses on much better level weight terms. That’s a massive turnaround and enough to suggest Woodhay Wonder has a strong winning chance. She is well drawn in stall 20 avoiding the single digits. Sean Levey rides and has a cracking 21% strike rate with seven wins riding for trainer Tom Ward this season.
Dangers lurk in numbers however it is best to concentrate on younger up and coming handicappers that are four or five years old. Arazio was a bit unlucky last year when third. The issue with him is he is a hold up horse that needs luck in running and lots of pace up front and would prefer softer going.
Royal Ascot 5:00
0.5 point each way Jarraff 11/2 Bet365 else 5/1 generally, 6 places.
0.5 point each way Woodhay Wonder 22/1 Paddy Power else 20/1 generally, 6 places.

Nicky
