Northumberland Plate Heritage Handicap Preview..

Hi Reader

Today, we take a look at the Northumberland Plate Handicap (Heritage Handicap) at Newcastle.

A maximum field of twenty runners go to post over a distance of two miles and a half furlong.

The event was established in 1833, and the inaugural running was won by Tomboy. It was initially held at Town Moor, and it was part of a meeting first staged at Killingworth in 1623. It was transferred to its present venue at Gosforth Park in 1882.

The Northumberland Plate originally took place on a Wednesday, and for many years the meeting was a holiday for local mine workers. The race became popularly known as the "Pitmen's Derby". The meeting ceased to be a holiday in 1949, and the race was switched to a Saturday in 1952.

The Northumberland Plate is now one of the richest two-mile handicaps in the world. It was sponsored by John Smith's from 2003 to 2016, by Stobart Rail Limited in 2017 and 2018 and by Betfair since 2019.

Since 2016, it has been run on an artificial all-weather surface, Tapeta, having previously been run on turf.

Golden Rules In Nothhumberland Plate

A look at the twenty runner Northumberland Plate Handicap (Heritage Handicap) at Newcastle.

Golden Rules is of interest on his second run for Thomas Faulker. To be honest I know little about the trainer so we take that on trust. The key is this lightly raced eight year old has the talent to go and win this race off the back of a nice comeback run at Kempton in March.

Golden Rules must have had lots of issues since leaving John Gosden’s yard back in 2021. He has the form in the book such as when fourth behind Reshoun in the Ascot Stakes and second behind Calling The Wind in this race in 2023. A rating of 90 is good as is the booking of Silvestre De Sousa.

Newcastle 3:15

1 point each way Golden Rules 8/1 generally, 4 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky

Hi Reader A massive 28 runner field lines up in the 2025 Stewards' Cup on the final day of the Goodwood Festival. For several years in the 1830s the senior steward at Goodwood presented an annual cup to the winner of any race of his choosing.
