Hi Reader
The Coral Gold Cup is a Premier Handicap National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Newbury over a distance of about 3 miles and 2 furlongs, and during its running there are twenty-one fences to be jumped. It is a handicap race, and it is scheduled to take place each year in late November or early December.
The race was established in 1957 as the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, and it was initially staged at Cheltenham. The winner of the inaugural running, Mandarin, was owned by Peggy Hennessy, a member of the family which founded Hennessy, the race's sponsoring company.
It was transferred to Newbury in 1960, and it was won by Mandarin for a second time in 1961. The race's second running was won by Taxidermist, ridden by the amateur rider John Lawrence, later Lord Oaksey, who was the breeder and part-owner of the 2011 winner, Carruthers.
The race's association with Hennessy continued until the 60th running, in 2016, and was British racing's longest-running commercial sponsorship at the time. The record was previously held by the Whitbread Gold Cup, which was first run seven months before the "Hennessy", and which was sponsored by Whitbread until 2001.
Ladbrokes were announced as the new sponsor in February 2017 and the race was run as the Ladbrokes Trophy until 2021. In 2022 Coral replaced Ladbrokes as the title sponsor and the race took its present title.
The race has been won by nine horses that have also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The most recent of these is Native River, the winner of the latter race in 2018.
Many Clouds became the first horse to win both the Hennessy Gold Cup and the Grand National, in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Resplendent Grey Fancy In Coral Gold Cup
Super Saturday is on the button when naming the jump racing action we have today.
What a cracking card at Newbury with the Coral Gold Cup up at the very top for staying handicap chase races.
The Coral Gold Cup is one of the feature races every season. I’ve learned the hard way over the years that good jumping and a previous run is usually a necessity to win this prestigious race. Resplendent Grey is a good jumper that was outpaced in some of his novice chase races last season. He turned a corner when wearing pieces and ridden more forward by Sean Bowen to win the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown.
I was surprised how well he ran to win over an inadequate two and a half miles in the Colin Park Chase at Carlisle. He beat Handstands that day which is excellent form. Resplendent Grey will relish going out to three and a quarter mile. As a second season chaser having only his eight runs over fences, he has achieved plenty so far in his chasing career.
Victtorino is preferred to The Changing Man as he is much better handicapped. Remember the Coral Gold Cup is a handicap after all, and weight counts over staying distances. Victtorino finished third in this race last season when running a remarkable race! He was flat to the boards, made some sloppy jumps and looked cooked turning into the finishing straight. It was a sight to see him finish strongly up the middle of the course, only coming into camera view near the finish line.
Victtorino backed up that third with a win over The Changing Man in a premier handicap chase at Ascot. He is four pounds better off against The Changing Man and it is good to see Venetia Williams horses running better recently. If the rain arrives and turns the ground winter soft, then it will suit Victtorino who stays strongly.
I was tempted by The Changing Man (might not have many pounds in hand) while the favourite Myretown lacks a recent run. Happy to go with our two stayers below with further rain at Newbury no problem.
Newbury 2:55
0.5 point each way Resplendent Grey 15/2 Unibet & Betway, 6 places.
0.5 point each way Victtorino 14/1 generally, 6 places.
Best of Luck,
Nicky
