bet365 Cambridgeshire (Heritage Handicap) Preview..

Hi Reader

The Cambridgeshire Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile and 1 furlong (1,811 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late September.

The event was established in 1839, and the inaugural running was won by Lanercost. It was founded in the same year as another major handicap at Newmarket, the Cesarewitch. The two races came to be known as the Autumn Double.

The Cesarewitch initially took place before the Cambridgeshire, but the schedule was later reversed and the Cambridgeshire now precedes the other race by two weeks.

Ok, let's crack on with today's preview and tips.

Cambridgeshire on Gosden's Radar

A smaller field than usual with only twenty three runners from a possible max of thirty five. The ground is good to firm and that will suit those bringing strong summer racing form into this autumn race.

The unseasonal good to firm ground at Newmarket is a positive for Westridge. The John and Thady Gosden trained gelding is best on fast ground where he can use his turn of foot. We witnessed that turn of foot when he quickened away from the field to win cosily over ten furlongs at the Goodwood Festival.

Westridge has an unusual high head carriage but trust me he is an honest horse and that is just this physique. The extended mile and two furlongs at York proved a little too far and I think he will relish a fast run nine furlongs. Billy Loughane rides and rode a winner yesterday with his confidence high.

Urban Lion is interesting going out in distance to nine furlongs having raced over a mile all season. He has been finishing off his races well over stiff miles at Ascot and Sandown. I thought he ran a cracker in the Royal Hunt Cup when drawn low and having his run slightly blocked up the far rail.

Urban Lion finished second to Ebt’s Guard in the Spring cup mile early this season. We forgive his below par run at the York Ebor Festival when drawn too high and carrying a huge weight. Ed Greatrex knows the horse well and I think he has a good draw in stall 19 with likely pace setter Mister Winston drawn in stall 17.

Newmarket 3:40

0.5 point each way Westridge 11/1 Bet365 & Unibet, 6 places.

0.5 point each way Urban Lion 18/1 Paddy Power & Boylesports, 6 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky

Hi Reader A welcome change from the flat to the jumps this Saturday. It has been a tough flat campaign in 2025 with a lack of Big Handicap winners. The aim is to win it all back over the course of the jumps season. That will include access to all tips for some of the major festivals until we get back into profit. Hopefully, that seems fair going forward into the winter and 2026. Big Saturday Race Preview And Tips All our Big Saturday Race Previews & Tips are published online at...
