Ayr Gold Cup Heritage Handicap Preview..

Hi Reader

The Ayr Gold Cup is a flat handicap race open to horses ged three years or older. It is run at Ayr over a distance of 6 furlongs, and it is scheduled to take place each year in September.

The event was established in 1804, and it was originally held at Ayr's former racecourse at Belleisle. In the early part of its history it was restricted to horses bred and trained in Scotland. It was initially contested over two separate heats of two miles, and was subsequently a single race with a two-mile distance.

The Ayr Gold Cup became a handicap in 1855, and it was shortened to about a mile in 1870. The Belleisle track closed in 1907, and the race was relocated and cut to 6 furlongs in 1908.

Ok, let's crack on with today's preview and tips.

Strike Red in Ayr Gold Cup

The Ayr Gold Cup is always an ultra-competitive heritage sprint handicap. A big field of 25 runners go to post aiming to land the £92,772 winners prize.

Strike Red is a horse we know well. He likes cut in the ground and ran well when second behind Two Tribes in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood. The ground was too quick at York, and he had a poor high draw too! Strike Red has run at Ayr three times but never with soft in the going description. He gets his ground this year and remains a well handicapped horse off a pound higher mark than in the Stewards Cup. A decent chance if getting the run of the race with proven stamina having won a premier handicap at the Curragh over six and a half furlongs in the past.

Aramran has enjoyed a fruitful four-year-old campaign. He ran up a four time of second place finishes before winning a six-furlong handicap on fast ground at Newbury on Lockinge stakes day. Ryan Moore told Richard Hannon he was pattern class going on his performance that day. Aramran has run well without winning in competitive races since his win at Newbury. He has excellent collateral form with the likes of More Thunder, Run Boy Run, Habooba and Get It. Our selection seems to handle most ground types so the ground will not be an issue. Sean Levey rides and he has a good middle draw in stall 13.

Dangers lurk everywhere! My final shortlist included Hammer The Hammer, Run Boy Run, Commanche Falls & Solar Acclaim.

Ayr 3:35
0.5 point each way Strike Red Starting Price, 6 places.

0.5 point each way Aramran Starting Price, 6 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky

Hi Reader A welcome change from the flat to the jumps this Saturday. It has been a tough flat campaign in 2025 with a lack of Big Handicap winners. The aim is to win it all back over the course of the jumps season. That will include access to all tips for some of the major festivals until we get back into profit. Hopefully, that seems fair going forward into the winter and 2026. Big Saturday Race Preview And Tips All our Big Saturday Race Previews & Tips are published online at...
