Holy Joe can smoke them in Ladbrokes Trophy

Off to Kempton this Saturday for the Ladbrokes Trophy Premier Handicap Chase. We back two against the field thanks to almost all bookies offering four places.

Dan Skelton is on his way to becoming champion UK trainer this season. Harry Skelton gets the pick of the rides, and it looks highly significant that he rides Holy Joe Smoke here. Dan runs Boomtown who is top weight and leaves Holy Joe Smoke on a lovely low weight of 10-8. Holy Joe Smoke ran well over 3m1f at the Cheltenham Showcase meeting in October. The two Irish horses that finished ahead of him were Three Card Brag and Backmeorsackme who have franked that form this season.

Dan tried Holy Joe Smoke twice down at two and a half miles at Cheltenham in November and December. That distance was too sharp, and he will love going out to three miles on a flat course. First time pieces are applied as it’s all systems go to land this valuable premier handicap chase.

Alan King brings The Doyen Chief back to Kempton following his win here last month. Tom Bellamy did well to keep the partnership intact that day following a bad mistake on the first circuit. It didn’t prevent The Doyen Chief holding off Your Darling with a better jump over the last fence securing the win.

A one-pound hike in the ratings looks lenient with Your Darling running a big race last Saturday to finish third at Ascot. The Doyen Chief ran well at the Cheltenham December meeting only to run out of steam up the hill finish over three and a quarter mile. There is lots of pace in this race which should set the race up nicely for The Doyen Chief who travels well throughout his races and is usually a good jumper.

Kempton 3:35

0.5 point each way Holy Joe Smoke 6/1 Bet365, Coral, Betfred, Unibet, Betway & Ladbrokes, 4 places.

0.5 point each way The Doyen Chief 10/1 generally, 4 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky

Hi Reader The Lincoln Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile at Doncaster in late March or early April. It is traditionally the feature event on the first Saturday of Britain's turf flat racing season. It usually takes place one or two weeks before the Grand National, and for betting purposes the two races form the Spring Double. The only jockey to have ever won both legs was Dave Dick in 1956.
